Recent sightingsRecent wildlife sightings at the Netherfield Lagoons Local Nature Reserve, Nottinghamshire as submitted by members of the Netherfield Wildlife Group. A Brown Argus was found at the car park end of the Slurry lagoon and the Hobby was seen again, being mobbed by Swallows. An exciting new find by Marion Bryce was a sawfly, Abia sericea, which has not been recorded in the area before. Six to eight Spotted Flycatchers were seen today as one or two families moved through on migration. They were seen along the Railway Embankment and by the Railway Bridge. At the Bridge were a large gathering of Hirundines, including at least 100 Swallows, which were spooked by a Hobby. A Hobby caused panic among the Swallows congregating on the wires above the Railway Bridge and seven Yellow Wagtails were working the paths surrounding the Deep Pit. A cream topped Marsh Harrier flew south over the lagoons at 4.30 this afternoon. A Brown Argus was found on the Slurry Lagoon bank near the old entrance (D3). A Clouded Yellow was seen today, flying along the Deep Pit bank, opposite the railway line. Two Small Red-eyed Damselflies were present on the Small Gravel Pit and a Green Sandpiper was seen on the Slurry Lagoon, as well as two Yellow-legged Gulls, a Common Snipe and three Shoveler. In the late afternoon a Peregrine flew low over the Slurry Lagoon, panicking all the birds below. The ducks flew out to the centre of the lagoon and floated in a raft. Amongst them was swimming a Black-tailed Godwit. The Peregrine had a tail feather projecting about one third of its length beyond the rest of the tail and hanging slightly below the others. It gave a sudden buck as it flew overhead and flicked the loose feather out, then dived down to swoop beneath it. Later a Buzzard drifted over but caused no reaction at all. Two Cetti’s Warblers were seen feeding at least two young birds in the Deep Pit this morning. There were lots of other warblers present too. A Black-tailed Godwit also put in a brief appearance on the Slurry Lagoon and four Small Red-eyed Damselflies were seen on the Large Gravel Pit. An adult Yellow-legged Gull was present in the gull roost on the Slurry Lagoon and at least one Grasshopper Warbler still reeling from the Gravel Pit area. A single Redshank was feeding on the Slurry Lagoon late afternoon. |
