The Iceland Gull was again present in the gull roost on the Slurry Lagoon this afternoon. JMD. 1st winter Iceland Gull [...] At dusk the gull roost contained about 500 birds, consisting mainly of Black-headed, Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls. there were also around 200 Teal and 70 Shoveler. Two Little Egrets and two Shelduck were also present and the Cetti’s Warbler sang briefly from the reed bed that the Starlings were roosting in. PS. [...] This evening, at the Starling roost, a strange, pale individual was noticed, raising hopes of a Rose-coloured Starling. Unfortunately better views showed that its wings and tail were paler than its body, making a leucistic variant more likely. There was also an aberrant Lesser Black-backed Gull, which JMD managed to photograph. PS. [...] The morning was frosty and the mist made the lagoons look like they were smoking. The geese were spectacular when they crowded into the lagoons, flying silhouetted against the mist. At about 08.15, on the Slurry Lagoon the Lapwings and Black-headed Gulls suddenly rose and flew out from the reedbeds. I looked but could see [...] [...] The Ross’s Goose has shown up on the reserve again after an absence of several months. It was seen on the Slurry Lagoon with the Grey-lag flock. JMD. [...] There are now several Pyramidal Orchids in flower on the site and the Spotted Orchids are doing very well this year. In the morning three foxes came out to play on the shore of the Slurry Lagoon, much to the consternation of the assembled ducks. PS. [...] The Spotted Orchids are showing well now and are flowering all over the site. The dry spring may well have affected them as the flower spikes are a little smaller than usual. The Marsh Orchids are beginning to go over now but the Spotted/Marsh hybrids are looking very strong. Unfortunately the Bee Orchids have crashed [...] [...] Several Marsh Orchids and some hybrid Marsh/Spotted Orchids are already out in several parts of the reserve. The other orchids are not so visible. PS. [...] The addition of fresh gravel and raking over the tern platforms took place on Wednesday afternoon 6th April after poor weather caused the postponement from 4th April. Although the day was bright and sunny there was still a fairly fresh south-westerly breeze as Pete Smith accompanied by Dave Gartside and Rob Woodward set about the launch [...] [...] This afternoon a Little Gull was seen passing over the site with a flock of Black-headed Gulls. In the morning two Grasshopper Warblers were found and more Sedge Warblers and Whitethroats had arrived. In the afternoon there were two Wheatears on the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon. RW/DM. Cowslips [...] |
