Warbler Walk – 9th May

 After a bright sunny morning the weather clouded over and the first raindrops were felt just as three intrepid birders arrived to start the walk. By the footbridge there were Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps and a Lesser Whitethroat, so at least the warblers were not put off by the weather. The rain came and went in short, [...] [...]

House Martin – 11th April

This morning was cold and overcast and did not encourage birds to sing. There were still 11 Chiffchaffs singing as well as 8 Blackcaps, 4 Willow Warblers, a Sedge Warbler and a Cetti’s. Two Common Terns were pursuing each other high over the site and a Sand Martin and a House Martin were briefly seen. [...] [...]

Chiffchaff – 15th March

This afternoon, during the brief sunny spell, a Chiffchaff was heard singing in the Deep Pit, also four Meadow pipits flew over. The Cetti’s Warbler was heard singing and a Shelduck is still on the Slurry Lagoon. RW. [...]

Goosander – 26th February

This morning two male Goosander flew over the site. There was an Oystercatcher on the river bank and a Cetti’s Warbler was singing from the Deep Pit. Spring is in the air today. Several Seven-spot Ladybirds were seen and a queen bumblebee as well as Coltsfoot coming into flower. PS. [...]

Egyptian Goose – 10th January

This afternoon there were two Water Rail showing well around the edge of the Large Gravel Pit and a Cetti’s warbler was scolding near the Willow Pond. Three Egyptian Geese flew over towards Attenborough. RW. In the late afternoon a Merlin flew the length of the Deep Pit before diving towards the bushes at its southern [...] [...]

Iceland Gull – 9th January

The Iceland Gull was present on the Slurry Lagoon again at around mid-day. It then flew off in the general direction of Dorket Head. The Slurry Lagoon Cetti’s Warbler was singing in the afternoon. RW. PS. [...]

Siberian Chiffchaff – 6th January

The Siberian Chiffchaff was seen along the Ouse Dyke again today, once in the company of another Chiffchaff. Later a Chiffchaff was seen on its own that showed features of the Scandinavian race, abietinus, being a very pale individual but not showing the clear grey mantle or wing bar of the other bird. Iceland Gull – 27th December

At about mid-day a first winter Iceland Gull joined the gull roost on the Slurry Lagoon. It spent some time bathing and then rested on the shore.  About forty Golden Plovers flew over at about the same time and a Peregrine had flushed the roost shortly before. Peregrine – 18th December

This morning the frost had taken a hold of the site and thin ice was forming on most of the lagoons. There were large flocks of winter thrushes, Redwings, Fieldfares and Blackbirds. By the Gravel Pits there were two Cetti’s Warblers and the Slurry Lagoon held over 300 Teal with Black-headed Gulls and Lapwings. A [...] [...]

Goosander – 11th December

This morning, during the bird count, two male Goosanders flew over the reserve and later a female landed on the Large Gravel Pit. Three Cetti’s Warblers were heard and there were three Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke. Good numbers of winter thrushes and various ducks were also present. PS. [...]
