The Large Gravel Pit had a Red-head Smew on it this morning. Also found were up to ten Goldeneye and there were five Little Egrets. In the bushes beside the Slurry Lagoon there were good numbers of Redwings and Fieldfares and a Redpoll was heard calling as it flew over. AE.CH.PS. [...]

This morning a Chiffchaff was seen foraging along the Lower Path. There were also large flocks of Redwings, Fieldfares and smaller numbers of Blackbirds feeding on the Hawthorn berries. There were up to four Little Egrets along the Ouse Dyke and a Cetti’s Warbler was singing from the Deep Pit. PS. [...] This morning there was lots of evidence of migration at the lagoons with a constant trickle of Skylarks flying over. One or two large flocks of Fieldfares also went through and some Redwings are already in the hawthorn hedges. A flock of thirteen Lesser Redpolls dropped onto the bushes on the Deep Pit banks and [...] [...] The Ouse Dyke has lost its Little Egrets for the time being, but a nice male Brambling was in the hedge alondside it this morning. There were still lots of winter thrushes about, mostly Redwings and Blackbirds with just a few Fieldfares. On the river were some Goldeneyes and then two immature male and a [...] [...] This morning there were lots of signs of birds migrating through the site. Several small flocks of Fieldfares went over, with a few Redwing. Amongst the finches going over was heard a Redpoll, Siskin and Brambling, plus three Tree Sparrows went through. A Swallow flew over the Deep Pit, where a drake Golden-eye had attached [...] [...] A Cetti’s Warbler was singing quite strongly in the Deep Pit this morning. The Slurry is still frozen solid but both the Large Gravel Pit and the Deep Pit have small areas of open water in which all the birds are gathering. A few Redwing and Fieldfare in the the hawthorn bushes but [...] [...] There were good numbers of Redwing around 350-400, 50+ Fieldfare, 1 Peregrine sat on the arms of one of the pylons on Severn Trent land, over 350 E.Teal, 40+Greenfinch near Rossi’s,a single Common Snipe, 2 Water Rail, 1 Cettis Warbler calling briefly from the Deep Water Lagoon bank, 75+Goldfinch mixed in with [...] [...] It was beautiful at the Lagoons today. The Slurry is completely frozen and the Large Gravel Pit it partially frozen so the birds are more concentrated. The cold weather has pushed in large numbers of winter thrushes particularly Redwing and Fieldfare attracted by the abundance of hawthorn berries and in S.T. fields a [...] [...] Good day for passage today with 35 Redwing SW, 2 Brambling, 2 Redpoll, 1 Jay, 7 Siskin and 30 Golden Plover flying over. Later in the day 56 Fieldfare went through, a Yellow-legged Gull settled on the Slurry Lagoon with around 1,000 Grey-lag Geese and about 2,000 Starlings came in to roost in the reed bed. [...] [...] Today there were several migrants seen at the site, including a Rock Pipit, three Fieldfares, Redpoll and a Dunlin as well as small numbers of Skylark and Meadow Pipits. RW. [...]  |
