Red-crested Pochard – 18th November

This afternoon there were seven Red-crested Pochard on the Large Gravel Pit, as well as two Little Egrets. The gull roost on the Slurry Lagoon again held the Caspian Gull as well as a flock of 267 Golden Plover and there was a pair of Pintail and a Shelduck. On the pasture field across the [...] [...]

Waxwings – 24th October

About nine skeins of Pinkies flew through to the east this morning, totalling approximately 1,200 to 1,500 birds. There were four Red-crested Pochards but no sign of the Ross’s Goose on the Large Gravel Pit. A flock of about 100 Fieldfares went through to the west , a Cetti’s was heard in the Haven and [...] [...]

Pink-footed Goose – 20th October

This morning there were lots of signs of birds migrating through the site. Several small flocks of Fieldfares went over, with a few Redwing. Amongst the finches going over was heard a Redpoll, Siskin and Brambling, plus three Tree Sparrows went through. A Swallow flew over the Deep Pit, where a drake Golden-eye had attached [...] [...]

Goosander – 13th December

During this morning’s Bird Count a male Goosander flew over the Large Gravel Pit and approximately fifty Pink-footed Geese flew west. There were good numbers of Redwings and Blackbirds and a Buzzard circled quite low over the Slurry Lagoon. The Cetti’s Warblers were heard in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and the Deep pit and [...] [...]

Caspian Gull – 27th September

During the ‘Patchwatch’ a Caspian Gull was tentatively identified on the Slurry Lagoon. Also present was a Dunlin, two Green Sandpipers, three Jays and the Pintail. There were still several species of warbler in evidence and a light passage of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits was noted. The Peregrine was seen again and two skeins of [...] [...]
